"Picture This!  Using Visualization Techniques to Deliver Business Value"

This session will introduce tools such as Kanban (Scrum) boards and story maps that can be used as visualization techniques to manage agile projects. 

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1.  Understand how Kanban/Scrum boards can be used to track delivery progress.
2.  Learn how to create a user story map that allows stakeholders to visualize their project.

3.  Apply collaboration techniques to better engage your team and stakeholders during planning.

Gantt charts are useful tools to establish project schedules and understand task dependencies.  However, they typically are “owned” by the Project Manager. 

Agile development encourages the entire team to participate in planning.  Instead of Gantt charts, Kanban or Scrum boards are used to plan and track delivery progress.  User story maps are effective tools that allow stakeholders and team members to visualize the scope of the entire project.  At a glance a user story map can tell us release plans, progress and how many scope changes have been introduced. 

Speaker Bio:

Bob Schommer is an Agile Coach and Senior Project Manager at Skyline Technologies.   He is a Certified Scrum Professional (CSP) and Certified Scrum Product Owner with over 30 years of IT experience in business analysis, project management, program management and portfolio management.  He has experience in multiple industries including transportation, logistics, manufacturing, energy services, utility, health care, insurance, prescription benefits, airline and grocery wholesaling. 

He is the President/ScrumMaster of the Northeast Wisconsin (NEW) Agile Users Group and has presented on agile and Scrum topics at PMI chapter meetings, IIBA chapter meetings and at Wisconsin Business Analyst Development Days (WI BADD).

Even in the best of times, companies do not have all the resources to meet all of its business needs. Portfolio management is a process to ensure that companies spend their scarce resources on the work that provide the most value, and work that is most closely aligned to the company’s business goals and strategies.  

Portfolio Management has three major components:
* Portfolio planning – Defining the intake process that moves an idea to a project.
* Portfolio execution - Staffing and managing the active portfolio of projects.
* Portfolio harvesting – Gaining and tracking the benefits of the projects.

 Pepper Burruss, Green Bay Packers Head Athletic Trainer

“There’s More to the Game Than Blowing Up the Ball; the Art of Teamwork by Attention to Detail!”

Mr. Burruss will provide motivational speaking, slideshow and questions/answers for approx 45-60 minutes to include topics such as: history of the Packers first hand, teamwork of the Packers organization, leadership, and overcoming adversity.

One of the more visible people in the organization, Pepper Burruss embarks upon his 21st season as the club’s head trainer, his 37th in the NFL overall. Overseer of the team’s medical care on a daily basis, Burruss, a certified athletic trainer and physical therapist, joined Green Bay in 1993 following 16 seasons with the New York Jets as an assistant athletic trainer.  Burruss has won several awards during his NFL tenure. Most recently, he earned the NFL Physicians Society’s Outstanding NFL Athletic Trainer award for the 2012 season at the annual NFL Scouting Combine.

Speaker Bio:

William Henderson Green Bay Packers 1995-2007.  He played at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1995, and has played every season in his career with the Packers. 

Henderson was elected to the Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame in 2011 and has eight years (1999–2006) of broadcasting experience as co-host of Monday Night Kickoff, a show produced by Green Bay TV station WBAY. He also worked as an analyst as part of ESPN's NFL Draft coverage April 2006.

Mark Murphy, Green Bay Packers President and Chief Executive Officer

"Planning:  For a Season and Game Day"

Speaker Bio:

Mark Murphy is in his sixth year as the Packers’ President and CEO.  Under Murphy’s guidance, the organization continues to rank as one of the NFL’s premier franchises, with highly successful operations. The team has compiled a 58-30 overall record (.659), made four straight playoff trips, captured two consecutive division titles and earned a victory in Super Bowl XLV.

Murphy, who holds a law degree and an MBA in finance, brought a unique and highly qualified background to his role as head of one of the NFL’s flagship franchises, first drawing from a deep understanding and appreciation of the game that comes from an eight-year playing career with the Washington Redskins. Later, he served a combined 16 years as director of athletics at Colgate University and Northwestern University, and was an assistant executive director of the NFL Players Association and a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice.

His NFL experience now includes Super Bowl wins as a player (XVII, 1982) and as a CEO (XLV, 2010), believed to be the first such achievement in NFL history.

Presentation #1 - “Agility is More than Agile”

Agile management practices, originally designed for and adopted in software development, are rapidly making their way into general use. Their promise – increased flexibility, increased communication and flexibility and enhanced responsiveness – holds great appeal in an age of increasingly rapid change. However, many organizations are struggling to realize the benefits they expect from Agile adoption.

Agile methods are another set of tools in the project management toolbox to increase business agility; only by aligning stakeholders, people and techniques on a project-by-project basis can organizations really increase agility. In the rush to adopt Agile practices (for example: daily standups, short planning cycles, iteration), organizations underestimate the cultural transformation required to fully realize the benefits of Agile. In addition, organizations sometimes apply Agile methods to projects that are not well-suited to them.

In this talk, a macro view on agility and Agile practices, Brian Birchbauer focuses on how an organization can and should focus on agility rather than ‘Agile’, and how project managers can become effective agents of change. He discusses the business drivers for increasing agility and offers practical ways to introduce Agile practices into an organization.

Presentation #2 – “Business Agility Training Camp”

In the overview of NRC’s agility framework, Brian introduces an approach to continually incorporating training and new techniques that increase a team’s agility during the course of a project. In the extended session, the additional time is spent on practical examples of how we have implemented these techniques over the course of real-world projects – evaluating the business environment, gauging a team’s skill level, strengths and weaknesses, developing and following a plan to increase agility. The extended session is designed to be interactive and thought-provoking, encouraging discussion between attendees. This is not an introduction to a rigid methodology or a specific set of tools; it is practical examples of how to apply a framework in a variety of situations.

Brian Birchbauer, PMP, CSM and Vice President of the Management Consulting Group at New Resources Consulting, has been managing projects, people, and PMOs for over 15 years. His focus is on how an organization’s technology, culture and practices intertwine to determine its performance and ability to respond quickly and effectively to change. Having worked “in the trenches”, across industries, as an executive and consultant, Brian brings wide-ranging experience and a portfolio of practical tools and techniques for successful project and portfolio management that are relevant to professionals at all levels in an organization.
